The Backrooms is an urban legend and online horror story that gets people interested because it is simple, creepy, and makes them feel like they are about to die. It started as a post on the imageboard 4chan in 2019, but it swiftly grew into a full-fledged mythology on YouTube, Reddit, TikTok, and indie games. The Backrooms is a made-up liminal place at its heart. It's a convoluted, never-ending maze of yellow rooms, buzzing fluorescent lights, dirty carpets, and the Backrooms Game sensation that something is always watching you.
The concept came from a user who submitted a fuzzy, yellow-tinted picture of an empty room with a scary caption: "If you're not careful and you noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you'll end up in the Backrooms." This one line went viral. It was weird how believable it seemed that you could "noclip" (a video game phrase for going through solid objects or walls) into this location from your own reality.
